Baptism

Significance of Baptism

Baptism is an outward expression of an inward change. For centuries, people who have surrendered their lives to Jesus have publicly declared their faith through this ancient symbol of death, burial, and rebirth.

Baptism is a public declaration that you …

  • are a follower of Jesus Christ.
  • are beginning a new life in Christ.
  • are part of a new family.

    Testimonials

    Courtney Butts

“I feel that I am now at a point in my faith where I can demonstrate my appreciation for Jesus by engaging in a symbolic act that reflects all that he has done for me and continues to do every day. This is my way of purifying myself and embarking on a fresh start.”

    Ethan Chene

“I immediately knew that the person I wanted to be was someone who is humble and kind hearted. I was like “I kind of want to be like Jesus,” you know? That’s when I decided to start imitating him, which eventually led me to the path of wanting to get baptized.”

    Hser So

“I was always surrounded by his word, I just want to take the next step and then just profess my faith once more and also partake in his death and resurrection.”

    Frequently Asked Questions About Baptism

    Why should I get baptized?

Because baptism is following Jesus’ example and obeying His command

“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’” (Matthew 3:16-17)

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.’” (Matthew 28:18-20)

What is the significance of baptism?

You are a follower of Jesus Christ.
“Those who accepted his message were baptized.” (Acts 2:41a)

You are beginning a changed life in Christ.
“We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” (Romans 6:4)

You are part of a new family.
“So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” (Galatians 3:26-27)

I have already been baptized. Should I be baptized again?

Your baptism should have signified your decision to follow Jesus, beginning a changed life, and uniting with a new family. If your baptism did not reflect this change of life, then you should be baptized again.

    Can my child be baptized?

We advise parents to wait until their child has asked to be baptized. This is usually a good indication that they are ready to begin a conversation about this significant spiritual milestone. While children under the age of seven can have a relationship with Jesus, they are not likely to remember their baptism, so we encourage parents to wait until they believe their child is old enough for their baptism to be a lifelong memory.

Are you having conversations with your child or trying to determine if they are ready to be baptized?

    Can my infant be baptized?

The New Testament teaches that baptism is a public expression of worship symbolizing our commitment to follow Jesus. Luke tells us that Jesus’ parents dedicated him to the Lord (Luke 2:22–40) and he was later baptized as an adult (Matthew 3:16–17).

Therefore, we do not practice infant baptism at Aspire Church. Instead, we dedicate infants as a part of our commitment to families and our mission to reach the next generation. While some churches practice infant baptism, this custom began about 300 years after the completion of the New Testament and is different from the biblical examples of new believers making their own decision to be baptized as a public profess their faith in Jesus.
