Social distancing and mask mandates have made us all more aware of the potential for contamination. In Bible times, people who were infected with various diseases were required to yell, “Unclean!” as they made their way in public. Masks, social distancing, and yelling “unclean” are all motivated by the same idea — unhealthy people contaminate healthy people. It doesn’t work the other way around. A sick person doesn’t get well because they are touched by a healthy person … unless that person is Jesus. Join us for part two of Jesus, Friend of Sinners as we learn how Jesus reverses the polarity of sin, sickness, and death.
Passage (read it):
Principles (know them):
Only Jesus reverses the polarity of sin.
- Our sin doesn’t contaminate Him; His holiness purifies us.
- 1 Peter 2:24
- Enemy’s lie and the message of religion: get cleaned up and then come to God.
Jesus wants to enter into our brokenness, not to be shut up in our churches.
- A God who has to be protected from the filth and disgusting reality of your sin is not a god who can save you from it.
- Religion did not heal this man of his leprosy; religion is what kept him isolated.
Jesus doesn’t just make us well, He restores us to community.
Practices (do them):
What is the most disgusting, shameful, hidden part of you?
Invite Jesus into that place.
This week’s readings will be from Romans 9-16 where Paul concludes his message about God’s great redemptive plan to the Christians in Rome. As you read this week’s passages, look for ways that Paul describes Jesus as the one who reverses the curse of sin and purifies us from our unrighteousness.
