For the City

While not many people have experienced being exiled from their country and carried into captivity, most of us have had to leave places we didn’t want to leave to go to places we didn’t want to go. Circumstances may have forced you to change jobs, relocate, change schools, and leave people you love to be with people you don’t even like! How should we respond to being exiled? Is it possible that God uses times of exile to draw us closer to Himself? Join us for part 7 of Jeremiah: A Prophet for the City as Pastor Gary looks at Jeremiah’s letter…

Burning Scrolls

God told Jeremiah to record His words on a scroll and deliver them to the king, but the king cut up and burned the scroll and then went after Jeremiah and his scribe for treason. While we may not take scissors to the pages of the Bible today, we often cut out the parts we don’t like by ignoring them. Persecuted

Jeremiah was part of a religious revival in the nation of Judah.  People were feeling good about their country and their public displays of religious commitment.  While Jeremiah was growing increasingly suspicious of this movement, another preacher was embracing the moment and riding the tide of popular public opinion. Now Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer, who was chief…

A New Creation

Jeremiah loved illustrations. As he passed by the potter’s house, he recognized that God, like the potter, had shaped and could reshape His creation into something new. Join us for part four of Jeremiah: A Prophet for the City where we will celebrate the new creation God is making in men and women who have made a public profession of their faith in Jesus Christ through baptism. The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let…

Deceitful Heart

History is full of examples of decay and reform; revolution and counter-revolution.  From politics and the economy to morality and religion, humans are in a continual battle for the right to define what is right. Is there an objective standard beyond human control or definition?  If so, who gets to determine what it is? Join us for part two of Jeremiah: A Prophet for the City, where we explore how Jeremiah confronted the counterfeit religious reforms of his day and what the church might learn from them today.  Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who…
