Community Missions

Community Missions

Being a missionary for Christ doesn't always mean traveling to remote corners of the planet; sometimes it means noticing the opportunities to demonstrate Christ's love right in your own community.  Here at Southside we are involved in a number of community mission enterprises. If you would like to participate in one of these missions, let us know.

HabiJax

Southside is a proud partner with HabiJax. The mission of HabiJax (Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville, Inc.) is to eliminate poverty and substandard housing conditions in Duval County by working in cooperation with God's people in need without regard to race or religion and to create a better habitat in which to live and work.

Blind Ministry

The Jacksonville Chapter of the Florida Christian Fellowship of the Blind and Visually Impaired (Blind Fellowship) is a spiritual support group which meets at Southside Baptist Church on the third Saturday of each month, September through May, at noon for lunch and a program.  Members come from all over the city. Southside is beginning its third year of sponsorship. Eight Murray Hill Baptist Church volunteers faithfully join Southside volunteers to help with the ministry.

This ministry is open to anyone visually impaired, or anyone who is interested in ministering to people with vision impairment. It is a place for the blind to get support from a caring Christian community whose sole objective is to proclaim Christ and His love.

Robin's Nest

For the past five years Southside Baptist has sponsored a tutoring ministry to the international children of Robin’s Nest, an apartment complex on Jacksonville's south side. What started out as a Student Ministry Kid’s Club has now broadened in scope to become a full-fledged tutoring ministry to the Robin’s Nest children.  Each tutor is encouraged to enlist a prayer partner that commits to pray during each weekly session. Southside’s tutors are committed to answer the call to go outside the walls of the church and to reach out to our community.

English as a Second Language

Southside has recently begun an English as a Second Language (ESL) ministry.  A rapidly growing outreach, our volunteers use ESL classes as a way to share the love of Christ and teach people His Word.

United Community Outreach Ministry (UCOM)

Southside supports United Community Outreach Ministry as a way to effectively minister to the needs of the south side of Jacksonville.  UCOM's mission is “Serving God together on the Southside through meeting our neighbors’ emergency and youth training needs." One way they have done this is by reaching across denominational and non-denominational lines to pool resources of time, talent, and money to meet Christ in their neighbors. Expanding on that mission, they are now finding ways to partner with like-minded agencies so that even more neighbors’ needs can be met and even more youth can be equipped to become capable adults. Together with the Red Cross, FCCJ, and the Bridge, they are finding ways for ministry to bear more fruit so that like one great gathered choir, they can do the most good for the glory of His name.
